Gas Discharge Tube
A gas discharge tube protects input ports against surges by breaking down and conducting under overvoltage. Most are hermetically sealed ceramic GDTs.
**Key Features**:
1. Filled with neon or hydrogen, ceramic-sealed, stable performance.
2. High impedance in normal state; arcs and clamps voltage rapidly during surges.
3. High current handling, fast response, low capacitance, small size, low cost, long life.
4. Limitations: high breakdown voltage, non-resetting in DC, unsuitable for low-voltage circuits, degradation after repeated surges.
5. Used for lightning and overvoltage protection in communication, signaling, data lines, and instruments.
